In many ways, Ronquières is the quintessential Belgian town. It has quaint unassuming residential streets, quiet cafes with strong beers, and an efficient canal system running through it. But in a modern context, perhaps it most Belgian for putting on a festival on a scale that belies the town's modest size.
Ronquières Festival takes place at the beginning of August under the control tower of the town's famous 'sloping lock' – an inclined plane on the Brussels-Charleroi canal that carries boats uphill – showcasing the best of current Francophone talent, with a few international stars thrown in for good measure, too. This year sees a cast of big names such as Eagle Eye Cherry, Clara Luciana Eddy de Pretto, Zazie, Lomepal and Bigflo & Oli, as well as some exciting up-and-coming artists including Claire Laffut, Adam Naas, Glauque, JUICY and more.
