Rinse & Repeat: Riton & Kah-Lo On Grammys, That Fake ID Video and Life as a Duo

Annie Mac Presents: Lost & Found Festival 2019

It's been a pretty hectic couple of years for Riton & Kah-Lo. Since meeting on social media, the pair have gone onto become chart-toppers and Grammy nominees with one of 2016's hottest records, Rinse & Repeat.

And in May they will head out to Malta to play AMP Lost & Found's first ever beach party alongside Annie Mac, Solardo and Stefflon Don.

Ahead of that, we caught up with them both to chat about Grammys, that Fake ID video and how they get on as a duo.

Thanks for chatting to us. So, how did you both meet?

Riton: Kah-Lo reached out to me on Twitter. She followed me, I followed her back and she sent me a DM. The rest is history as they say!

The last year or so must have been pretty crazy for you both, right?

Kah-Lo: It's been pretty manic for me over the last year. I've been travelling a lot more and doing more shows than I've ever done before. I can't complain though, it's what I've always wanted to do.

How was it to be nominated for a Grammy? Did you get to the ceremony?

Kah-Lo: Shocking more than anything! I always thought I would have a few more songs out; maybe an album or two before I was nominated for a Grammy. To be nominated on your first single is pretty amazing, I'm super grateful.

Riton: We went to the show, which was just ridiculously long. Our category was part of the pre-telecast so we had to get there really early and then we were there for ages just waiting for our category to be called.

You're playing at Annie Mac Presents Lost & Found Festival in May. It must be great to have the backing of such an established name?

Riton: Annie's just amazing! She's so supportive of everything I've done, especially all this new music I've made with Kah-Lo. She was probably one of the first people to really get it so I can only ever be thankful for all her support.

Kah-Lo: Annie's the Queen. We love Annie!

How excited are you to be playing? Have you both been to Malta before?

Kah-Lo: I've never been before so I'm really excited to go. We went to Ibiza last year which was nice because it was hot and it reminded me of home. I even got to swim in the sea for the first time, so I'm hoping to get more of the same.

If you were to curate your own festival, who would be your three headliners?

Kah-Lo: It would have to be Kanye West, Rihanna and Chris Brown. I know there's a bit of a conflict of interest in there but I'd make it work!

Tell us about the inspiration behind the video for your latest single Fake ID?

Riton: We just wanted to keep it really DIY but also keep it really… real! Kah-Lo is obviously from Nigeria and she knows all about the nightlife there so we wanted to show a typical night out in Lagos and as you’ll see, it's not much different to a night out in the UK. Our album is all about bridging the gap between cultures and I think the video plays a part in that too.

How did you find Lagos, Riton? Was Kah-Lo a good tour guide?

She's great. I'd been before for our last video Money with Mr Eazi & Davido, but I was only there for one day. This time I was there for pretty much a week and I loved it. The mosquitos loved me too.

Do you feel you compliment each other well musically? What are both your musical inspirations?

Kah-Lo: I think we bring out the best in each other and that's how we've been able to make this forthcoming album. I’m really excited for everyone to hear it because it not only showcases all my different sides but it also showcases Riton's versatility. He's such a musical genius and I'm glad we can show that off together.

What's the most annoying thing about the other?

Riton: I don't think we annoy each other really. It's all love between us. Someone asked us who was the biggest diva between us recently and we're really not. Kah-Lo takes a little longer to get ready when we go out but I can be a grumpy old man when I want to. It's a great mix.

And finally, what are your plans for the rest of 2018?

Riton: The album! We’ve been working really hard on this album and we're really excited for everybody to hear it. We've also got some shows lined up for the summer so we're just ready to get cracking!

Kah-Lo: Yeah, I'm super excited for the album, it'll be great to get some new music out and it really shows off our versatility and how well we work together so yeah. I'm also looking forward to travelling more and doing more shows.
