In the 3 or 4 years since it first arrived on the scene, Morocco's Oasis Festival has managed to stake a genuine claim for being one of underground electronic music's finest festivals. And with the first announcement for their 2018 edition now upon us, they are showing no signs of letting up.
One thing that stands out immediately is the presence of the big man himself, Mr Carl Cox; his appearance at the intimate Moroccan festival sitting alongside headline sets at global dance music giants like Ultra Europe, Creamfields and UMF in his summer schedule for 2018.
Another thing that catches the eye out is the scheduled meeting of Chicago greats, as veteran DJ and producer Derrick Carter goes back-to-back with one of the undeniable break-out stars of recent years in The Black Madonna.
But probably the most pleasing thing about this first announcement is the diversity and gender balance; a refreshing sight in a genre and scene that so regularly falls short of achieving anything close to equal representation on lineups.
It really shouldn't be remarkable, but despite all the progress of recent years it is still frustratingly common to see festival bills overwhelmingly dominated by mostly white, cis-men, so Oasis Festival definitely deserve some credit for this one. Let's hope it continues as more and more names are added.
