7 Urban Acts You Have To See This Year

With Europe’s #1 hiphop event Fresh Island Festival celebrating another successful year, along with the recent launch of our Marsatac packages, Festicket thought we’d take some time out to recommend some unmissable rap, hip-hop, soul and urban influenced acts you need to experience this summer…

1 - JUNGLE

Debuting with a mid-tempo funk sound pleasantly arranged with soul influences and psychedelic touches, this London based collective are one of the hottest new acts on the urban scene.

Creating a sense of mystery around the faces behind the music, press photos are rare but their signature uplifting videos are plenty. From the adorable yet fierce 6 year old b-girl Terra in ‘Platoon’, to the infectious roller-skate dancing of ‘The Heat’, the energy and concepts of their videos are often felt in their live performance.

Appearing at: Pitchfork Paris, Club To Club Torino & Unknown.

2 - KELELA

Having previously dabbled in singing jazz and progressive metal, Kelela has now formed her own distinctive sound which falls into a hybrid of R&B, grime, techno, house and ambient.

With a sound as multinational as his family background (Born in Germany to French parents, with his father having Vietnamese ancestry) Arnaud Bernard aka Onra is an experimental hip hop beat-maker all urban fans should experience.

5 - DIE ANTWOORD

Fiercely dividing critics and fans of hip-hop, many wouldn’t include the South-African gang in this genre, whereas an equally large percentage would argue they have continuously earnt their stripes.

Michael Quattlebaum Jr - mostly referred to by her feminine stage name of Mykki Blanco - is another game changer, forcing the status quo to expand their understanding of the possibilities of rap and hip-hop.
