TOP 10: Family-Friendly Festivals


Family-friendly life can be tricky, but welcoming a new member to the join the fun doesn't have to mean giving up on festivals. In fact, there are tons out there that are not just family-friendly, but include whole areas dedicated to the next generation, filled with wonder and endless activities. Here are some to put at the top of your list.


Wychwood Festival

 

Headliners: The Stranglers, ABC, Scouting For Girls, Bez, T'Pau, Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club, Toyah, Penny Mob 

The ultimate family delight, Wychwood Festival packs in more than 100 artists of music and comedy, alongside a kids' literature festival and countless workshops for all the family, meaning all ages are entertained. And we mean all, as the music spans the generations, sweeping in British rock legends such as UB40 and the rising urban sounds of Ghostpoet. There will also be rides, stalls, a silent disco and a real ale festival for the parents to enjoy!

Ticket Ages: Under 5s go free but £0 ticket needs to be purchased. Ages 5-9 and 10-15 have their own price bracket

Camp Bestival

Headliners: Nile Rogers & Chic, The Human League, Jess Glynne, Annie Mac, Lewis Capaldi, Beans On Toast

Set in the magical surroundings of Lulworth Castle, Camp Bestival has won the 'Best Family Event' accolade at the UK Festival Awards so many times, that it’s now considered a must for children and adults of all ages. Sister event to the majestic Bestival, little sister is just as full of nonsense and surprise, with theatre, art, comedy, poetry and all kinds of entertainment, specifically targeted at different age groups from 0-100.

Ticket Ages: Those under 4 go for free but still need a ticket, while those under 18 must be with a parent, or a legal or nominated guardian.

Tauron Nowa Muzka 

Headliners: Gyrl, Glasse, Brat Star, Apparat, Ana Carla Maza, Askjell, Kamp!

Regarded as one of the most pioneering festivals around, Tauron Nowa Muzkya will turn your child into the coolest kid at school in the space of a weekend. But if the wave of dance, electronica, nu-jazz and soul does get a bit too much for them, the festival also has a scheduled kids activity program and a whole kids district where every child can experience a range of games along with music and art workshops in the company of a professional carer.

Ticket Ages: Unfortunately, the festival doesn't offer any discounts for children.

Positivus

Headliners: The 1975, Cut Copy, Disclosure, Underworld, Adam Naas, Elderbrook

The largest arts and culture festival in the Baltics is set amongst sunny beaches and misty forests with every corner scattered with dazzling artwork. Walk around and find yourself lost in the magic, or take the children over to Kids Island, where they can get involved with a whole host of activities aimed to explore, stimulate and harness creativity. 

Ticket Ages: Children up to the age of 10 can visit the festival for free, and an adult must accompany children under the age of 16 at all times.

Latitude

Headliners: Primal Scream, Lana Del Ray, Snow Patrol, George Ezra, Slaves, Everything Everything, Underworld 

Opera by a lake and DJs hidden in the wood, Latitude is as much a visual adventure as it is a physical and musical one. Deep in the magical forests of rural Suffolk, Latitude’s journey of eclectic music, theatre, film and creative arts will hold the attention of every member of the family, meaning you could quite easily jump from a craft workshop to a Brian Cox lecture, and end up at a huge pyrotechnic headline set. 

Ticket Ages: Latitude has a range of tickets for those under 18, which are: Under 4s (free), 4-12s (child ticket starting at £8), 13-15s (accompanied teen ticket), 16s and over (full price ticket).

Isle of Wight Festival

 

 

Festival lineup: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Courteeners, George Ezra, Lily Allen, Fatboy Slim, Jess Glynne, Richard Ashcroft

A festival heavyweight, Isle of Wight consistently pulls in the biggest names on the scene, bagging a festival exclusive in the form of Fleetwood Mac, and Life's soundtrack artist Pharrell Williams. But despite the scale, Isle of Wight far from neglects the next generation, dedicating a Kids Zone filled with performances and events across the weekend, such as arts and crafts, storytelling, circus acts, magicians and more to entertain the little ones. 

Ticket Ages: Those under 12 get in for free – but they must still be booked in advance.

When and where: 13-16th June 2019, Isle of Wight, UK

Beauregard

Headliners: Tears For Fears, Limp Bizkit, Mogwai, Angéle, Suprime NTM, Interpol, Gossip

Set amongst a beautiful château, Beauregard combines unbeatable music and stunning French countryside in a mix of festival and idyllic country holiday. Beyond the eclectic bill, the festival's children area, aptly named Space Kids, was designed by household name IKEA, meaning we can expect the classic design to compliment the range of activities. 

Ticket Ages: Children under 12 are free and don't need any form of ticket, just some form of valid ID to prove their age on entry.

Colours of Ostrava

Headliners: The Cure, Florence and The Machine, Rag 'n' Bone Man, Years & Years, Mogwai, John Butler Trio

Add another dose of colour to your summer at Ostrava, partying amongst former blast furnaces, mines and ironworks revitalised with new life. Renowned for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Colours lays on a dedicated kid's programme around the wider theatrical performances, workshops and film screenings for everyone to enjoy.

Ticket Ages: All those under 140cm can enter the festival for free.

When and where: 17-20th July 2019, Ostrava, Czech Republic

Green Man Festival

Headliners: Fout Tet, Maribou State, Father John Misty, IDLES, Broken Social Scene, Stereolab

Taking in the might of the Brecon Beacons, Green Man Festival lands a 1,500 strong folk-led lineup across the comedy, theatre and literary spheres onto mountainous worlds that dazzle and delight. One of those is Little Folk, an Alice in Wonderland park filled with all sorts of magical games, activities and workshops to let your child's imagination run wild with Alice, the Mad Hatter and his friends. Don't forget your fancy dress!

Ticket Ages: Children aged up to 4 go free but do need an Infant Ticket, while Little Folk tickets for children aged 5-12 only cost £5.

Shambala Festival

Headliners: IDLES, Henge, Jimmy & Sid, Ladama, Age Of L.U.N.A., The Comet Is Coming, Otis Mansha 

Shambala is a place to play, revitalise, and make lots of new friends while enjoying the eclectic mix that perfectly blends creativity and participation, meaning the festival really pushes the boundaries when it comes to embracing families. With too much to mention in a sentence, the winner of the Festival Kidz 'festival of the year' for 2013 dedicates camping space, a family yurt telling bedtime stories, a vibrant kids field with endless activities, and even a Bush Camp, where children are taken offsite for a whole night to experience an inspiring adventure. And that's just a taste!

Ticket Ages: Under 5s can go for free, while those aged 5-14 cost around £40, and those then up to 18 cost around £90. Tickets must be booked for all ages.
