The Basics

6-10 August 2014
Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Arguably the biggest and best music festival in Portugal, join MEO Sudoeste as it celebrates its 18th birthday this year with an eclectic array of musical talent.

Everything from the big electro house rhythms of Alesso will go up against the smooth jazz sounds of Jamie Cullum over five days of world beating acts.

More than 30,000 people will descend upon the coast of Southern Portugal for five days of live music and stay longer for a camping experience like no other.

Over the years Daft Punk, Kanye West, Oasis, David Guetta and Snoop Dogg have all played at the festival, which this year will welcome two Brit awards winners: Ellie Goulding and Tom Odell.

MEO Sudoeste has become a rite of passage for locals, so take the opportunity to experience it for yourself and find out what makes this festival such a Portuguese institution.

Our Recommendations

What We Love

What We Love

  • The music might only be programmed for five nights but the real way to experience MEO Sudoeste is by spending more than a week camping here. Locals in particular treat the festival and the extended campsite opening hours like a summer camp, staying under canvas for up to nine nights.

  • The Canal of Herdade da Casa Branca is a great way to escape the Portuguese sun during the peak hours and you can go for a splash safe in the knowledge it's all supervised by certified lifeguards. The canal will be accessible from 0900-1900 (1-5 August) and 0900-2000 (6-10 August).

What To Know

What To Know

  • During the festival a free shuttle bus runs regularly between the festival and the local town and beaches for shopping, eating and bathing in the Portuguese sun.

  • Don't forget to make the most of the shade around the festival site during the peak of the midday heat. August is one the hottest months of the year in Portugal and daytime temperature reach an average high of 29°C, although major heat waves occasionally occur and temperatures can peak in excess of 35°C.
