With kilometres of glorious coastline and islands galore, you might wonder why a Spanish festival would be situated in a bone-dry desert. However, as Monegros gears up for its 19th edition you can only assume the 40,000 people who attend each year's 24 hour party don’t mind the arid landscape and are fine with a little sand in their shoes.
Blossoming from its origins as an underground affair run by a group of friends, today there is plenty on offer for fans of all sorts of sounds. Last year saw rave antiques The Prodigy headline along with appearances from Richie Hawtin, 2ManyDJs and over 50 more acts. Look out for the special fireworks display on Sunday which closes the festival each year.

The Monegros Desert is between Madrid and Barcelona, in the Huesca province. Prone to droughts, the badlands of Monegros have a population of around 20,000 - incidentally, half of the capacity of the Monegros Desert Festival.
If you catch a flight, these cities are the best options:
Arriving in Madrid or Barcelona, we suggest you avoid traffic by catching the Monegros Bus. There are shuttle services from Madrid and Barcelona to the Monegros Site.
The History: What started in 1993 as a family BBQ on an arid bit of land has turned into a 22 hour electronic music marathon.
The Range of Music: from techno, minimal, house, D&B to Dubstep and hard-techno, the full spectrum of electronic music is represented.
Alongside stages running all night, Monegros ran a ful skateboarding competition, with 40 of the world's best competing.
2012 also saw the inaugural DesART Festival - with cranes carrying 60 ft mannequins, dancers and huge art cars parading through the site.
