The Southern twin-sister to Northern Germany's Hurricane festival, the aptly named Southside brings the beautifully scenic countryside to life with the alternative waves of alt-J, deadmau5 and Florence and the Machine.

Formed in 1999, the festival has gone from strength to strength pulling in names such as Arcade Fire and the Pixies since its inception on a former military airbase, and now holds a capacity of 40,000, which means Southside has the pulling power, and yet doesn't feel overwhelming.

Combine the killer lineup with beautiful weather, and you've got a pairing that will live long in the memory.

The festival takes place in a former military airbase that was used by the German Army Aviation Corps until 1994. The site also has good links to Stuttgart and Munich.

FAQs

BY TRAIN: The best station to get the train to is Tuttlingen, where the festival will be operating a shuttle service to and from the festival site.

Children 6 or under are not allowed at Southside, and those 18 or under must carry written permission with them at all times. This can be downloaded from the festival's official site.

Southside is introducing a new cashless system this year: your festival wristband will have chip in it, which can be topped up for free at station points around the festival site. Cash, credit or debit card can be used at these stations, and then all food, drink and merchandise can be paid for with your wristband.
