A metal veteran
SWR Barroselas Metalfest is a long-running heavy metal music festival in northern Portugal, which is now in its third decade of curating lineups filled with talent from both the national and international metal scenes.
Across three days, the festival showcases performers young and old from the various subgenres that metal offers up: industrial, experimental, black, symphonic, death, melodic and more.
And over the 20 years plus that the festival has been taking place, it has developed a legion of devoted fans and a reputation for consistency that is almost unrivalled anywhere else in the country.
The 2020 lineup will be announced closer to the festival.
Located around 15km from Viana do Castelo in the northwest of Portugal, Barroselas first hosted the festival back in 1998.
Avenida São Paulo da Cruz, Barroselas, Viana do Castelo, Portugal
BY PLANE: Porto Airport is the closest to the festival. From there, catch a train to Porto Campanhã and then another on to Barroselas.
BY TRAIN: You can reach Barroselas directly by rail from both Porto (Campanhã) and from Viana do Castelo. If travelling from further inland (Braga, for example), you will most likely need to change at either Nine or Trofa.
From the south, take the A1 highway towards Porto. After the last toll go straight to IC1/Ponte da Arrábida and then turn right towards A28/Viana do Castelo. Turn right to Neiva/Braga/Barcelos and at the roundabout follow to EN13/Zona Industrial and after 5km turn right to Barroselas (EN308).
From the north, take the P1/A3 towards Porto and get out at the Corvos/Anais toll. Follow through EN201 until Corvos, and from there take the EN308 to Barroselas.
From inland, follow signs to A11/Barcelos, then take the EN103 to Viana do Castelo and turn right after about 5km, heading to the EN305 to Barroselas.
