Headbang your way to the heavy metal mecca

Wacken Open Air is the biggest, most beloved heavy metal festival in Europe, if not the world.

Since it's birth in 1990, Wacken Open Air has rightfully earned the crown as the bucket-list heavy metal music festival, taking place in the municipality of Wacken near Hamburg, Germany.

Having spawned several documentaries about its history and cultural impact, the folklore surrounding Wacken Open Air contributes to its ongoing mythology which brings loyal metalheads through their hallowed gates year-on-year.

Considered as one of the world's last 'true' heavy metal festivals, disciples of heavy metal, hard rock, and all the riffs in between make the pilgrimage from across all corners of the globe - people come from far and wide, and tickets sell out in a matter of minutes.

The Wacken Open Air experience is as sought after as the lineup, but with over 150 artists performing across 8 stages within 280 hectares, there's plenty of room for 80,000 devoted metalheads from 80 different nations to headbang till sunrise.

Lineup

The 2020 lineup will be announced nearer to the festival.

During the festival, the small town of Wacken submits itself to the heavy metal overlords, with stages, stalls, campground etc. spread out throughout a massive section of flat land.
