Waves Vienna’s motto is "East meets West“: numerous international alternative, electronic, rock, and club acts will perform around Vienna’s 2nd district. Additionally, local artists and sophisticated musicians from Eastern Europe form an essential part of the festival’s programme. Over the course of 4 days 80 national and international acts will be performing on 12 different stages. You can expect a tasty blend of the best in dance, indie and everything in between.

From October 4th to 7th 2012, Viennaʼs club and showcase festival Waves Vienna will take place for the second time. New talents as well as established acts will be performing on twelve stages along Viennaʼs Danube Canal and Praterstraße in the cityʼs 2nd district. This year, Waves Vienna will welcome two countries as special guests. True to the motto “East Meets West”, there will be a focus on acts from Poland and France in the live programme. The Waves Vienna Music Conference will furthermore devote a part of its programme to the respective music markets and scenes of these countries.

There are 11 festival venues in clubs across the Leopoldstadt (2nd) district of Vienna, which is right in the middle of the city. The Heineken Music Train and the Red Bull Brandwagon will be a little trickier to locate…!

    FAQs

The 2nd district is very central, and can be reached easily by train or car. However, parking can expensive (upwards of €21 per day, although discounted parking is available with some hotels) and it can be difficult to find space, so driving is not recommended!

    • From the Wien-Schwechat airport: You can take a taxi or municipal train from the airport, but the best way is to take the City Airport Train to Wien Mitte - Landstraße, then change to underground (U-Bahn) U4 in the direction of Heilingenstadt as far as Schwedenplatz
    • From the West train station: Again, there are taxis available, or you can take the underground U3 in the direction of Simmering as far as Stephansplatz, then the U1 to Schwedenplatz

All the venues are within walking distance of one another.

Vienna has an incredibly rich heritage of classical music, since it has been home to Mozart, Beethoven, the Schrammel brothers and the Strauss family. The city's two concert halls and two opera houses host a programme of music and opera all year round, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Boys' Choir the most distinguished of their performers.

The 1st district is the Vienna's real "old town", and the 2nd and 3rd districts complete the city centre. As with many European capitals, the first thing to do is just to explore the streets and enjoy the beauty of the city itself.

Half-way down the Mariahilfer Straße, the Museum Quarter (MQ) is packed with galleries and cafes, and many of the city's performers and musicians provide street entertainment in the area.

The Kartner Straße is a beautiful place to walk, as a pedestrianised street with with a great variety of shops and street music in abundance. Those lucky enough to be there at the right time will also be serenaded from above, as a the city's concert orchestras are known for rehearsing in rooms above the Kartner Straße.

The 120 market stands of the Naschmarkt are a must-see whether you have shopping to do or just want to soak up the atmosphere. The market's location is particularly interesting: during the occupation by the Allies (1945-1955), the Naschmarkt was the point at which all four zones met. Military and police presence was so tight that traders and customers needed their passport to cross the road, yet the area was also famous for its drug deals - not your average market experience, to say the least.

There are 11 festival venues in clubs across the Leopoldstadt (2nd) district of Vienna, which is right in the middle of the city. The Heineken Music Train and the Red Bull Brandwagon will be a little trickier to locate…!

The first venues open at 6.30pm on Thursday 4th. The official opening is from 6.45pm at Gartenbaukino, and will be a screening of "Shut Up and Play the Hits", which documents LCD Soundsystem's final performance. On Sunday 7th there will be an afterparty at one of the venues, with details to follow…

The Conference starts at 11am on Thursday 4th, with the last event ending at 6pm on Friday 5th.

The minimum age for entry to the club venues is 18.

Alcohol cannot be brought inside the venues. Drinks are available once you're in, though.

Unfortunately not. It is illegal in Vienna to drink in public.

Food cannot be brought into the venues, but some will serve food - check venue details.

Debit cards can be used at most of venues - the Heineken Music Train and the Red Bull Brandwagon being exceptions. Cash is easily available as all venues are in the centre of Vienna.

Average temperature in Vienna for October is 10C, so Waves might be best enjoyed with a jumper on when not on the dance floor. October is one of the driest months, however, but that's not saying a lot…!

Packing a sweater or two would be a good idea, and probably a raincoat just in case. But don't worry, there's no need for hat, scarf and gloves!
