Packed with imperial history, Vienna is one of the most magnificent cities in the world, and boasts at the same time a rich contemporary culture and a lively nightlife to be explored through Waves festival.
Various Venues, Vienna, Austria
Yes, the minimum age for entry to the club venues is 18.
Vienna has an incredibly rich heritage of classical music, since it has been home to Mozart, Beethoven, the Schrammel brothers and the Strauss family. The city's two concert halls and two opera houses host a programme of music and opera all year round, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Boys' Choir the most distinguished of their performers.
The 1st district is the Vienna's real "old town", and the 2nd and 3rd districts complete the city centre. As with many European capitals, the first thing to do is just to explore the streets and enjoy the beauty of the city itself.
Half-way down the Mariahilfer Straße, the Museum Quarter (MQ) is packed with galleries and cafes, and many of the city's performers and musicians provide street entertainment in the area.
The Kartner Straße is a beautiful place to walk, as a pedestrianised street with with a great variety of shops and street music in abundance. Those lucky enough to be there at the right time will also be serenaded from above, as a the city's concert orchestras are known for rehearsing in rooms above the Kartner Straße.
The 120 market stands of the Naschmarkt are a must-see whether you have shopping to do or just want to soak up the atmosphere. The market's location is particularly interesting: during the occupation by the Allies (1945-1955), the Naschmarkt was the point at which all four zones met. Military and police presence was so tight that traders and customers needed their passport to cross the road, yet the area was also famous for its drug deals - not your average market experience, to say the least.
The Waves Vienna Music Conference is a part of the festival, which incorporates a rich program of lectures, panels and workshops around the festival motto "East meets West".
The 2nd district is very central, and can be reached easily by train or car. However, parking can expensive (upwards of €21 per day, although discounted parking is available with some hotels) and it can be difficult to find space, so driving is not recommended!
- From the Wien-Schwechat airport: You can take a taxi or municipal train from the airport, but the best way is to take the City Airport Train to Wien Mitte - Landstraße, then change to underground (U-Bahn) U4 in the direction of Heilingenstadt as far as Schwedenplatz
- From the West train station: Again, there are taxis available, or you can take the underground U3 in the direction of Simmering as far as Stephansplatz, then the U1 to Schwedenplatz
All the venues are within walking distance of one another.
Waves Vienna will be held in about 10 venues, including clubs such as Flex & Flex Café, concert venues such as Brut & Brut Bar, Haus der Musik, Porgy & Bess and Vienna's Konzerthaus, as well as other unique location such as Heuer, Alte Post and Xpedit Lager. Finally, the Wiener Linien tramline will be transformed in a 'Music Train' that will connect the different venues along the Ringstraße.
