With the legendary Glastonbury Festival taking a year off in 2018, we decided we were in desperate need of some festivals to fill the huge, Somerset shaped hole.

With a hall of fame that includes the likes of The Cure, blur and Arcade Fire, Primavera not only has a heavyweight lineup that's sprouted out from its indie roots and now includes artists such as James Blake, Jon Hopkins, Dixon and Run the Jewels, it also showcases it on the beautiful Spanish beaches close to Barcelona.

Reading & Leeds

Reading and Leeds Festivals have become a rite of passage for most British festival-goers, and it's not surprising when you gaze upon their lineup.
Although still inherently a "rock" festival, the duo are becoming more and more alternative year on year with the introduction of dance tents and urban stages, and with a reputation right up there with the best, they have the pulling power to get whoever they want.

Isle of Wight
Headliners: Kasabian, Depeche Mode, The Killers, Liam Gallagher
Regarded as the Woodstock of the UK, and the setting for Jimi Hendrix's last ever gig, Isle of Wight Festival was the original British music festival, so popular, that it was even periodically prevented from happening by Parliament who were so thrown by this new field-gathering craze.
Now though, it's still as important as it was, with the pull to bag a festival exclusive for Fleetwood Mac, as well as a bill that's not just musically eclectic, but embraces all aspects of the arts, be it comedy, cabaret, poetry, talks, quizzes and even a fairground.

Often labelled as the European alternative to the Burning Man, Sziget is abound with quirking activities, surreal venues, an amusement park and incredible art installations that combine to create its world of wonder, soundtracked by international names in the world of rock, pop and electronic.

France may have been waiting for over 25 years, but Lollapaloozas distinctive brand has found its way to Paris via Chile, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Berlin.
The city's Hippodrome de Longchamp will be its setting, providing a unique backdrop to Lollapalooza's continental blend of rock, pop, RnB and electronic music.

It may be nicknamed the "French Glastonbury", but Les Eurockéennes certainly trumps its English counterpart for location!
Set beside the beautiful natural lakes of Belfort, over 60 gigs filled with a rich lineup that has previously featured legends such as Radiohead, David Bowie, The Cure and Jay-Z, gives festival-goers the chance to see their favourite artists in a unique and unforgettable setting.

Arguably Britain's most left-field festival, Bestival is a toy-box of surprise, filled with quirkiness and utter oddity that'll make your imagination run wild.
Backed by a musical lineup topped by household names in every genre, alongside its collection of comedy, theatre and workshops, Bestival's bonanza is permeated with tonnes of fancy-dressers, wooded amphitheatres, a story-telling Wishing Tree and of course its annual world record attempt.

With days spent lounging on Spain's sunny beaches, and nights partying to names such as blur, The Prodigy and Public Enemy, Benicàssim has become a staple of the European festival circuit, popular with those wanting to pair a major festival with sun, sea and beaches.

The Governors Ball Music Festival

With a mega lineup that's now become a given, Roskilde thrives in other areas. For one, what festival do you know that holds a naked run each year, with the prize being a free ticket to next year's event? Or a mass pillow fight? None, I imagine.
Oh, and all Roskilde's profits are donated to charity, meaning it's a festival created by festival lovers, for festival lovers, and now attracts around 130,000 people every year.
