Travel Spotlight: Italy's Most Inspiring Festival Destinations

Electronic music amidst the royal past of Turin, and sweeping acoustic melodies backdropped by a coastline as beautiful as they come. Italy's music festivals are blessed with some of the most inspiring and distinctive live music locations in the whole of Europe.

So we asked five of our friends to tell us what makes their area so special – and why their festival might just be worth the trip.

Kappa FuturFestival – Maurizio Vitale

"What's the best thing to do in Turin? Go to Kappa FuturFestival of course! And aside from that, it is a beautiful, historic and at the same time contemporary city. You can really see the contrast between the royal past and the industrial present. It shows in the architecture, with regal palaces opposed to disused factories, and it shows in the atmosphere. The cultural offering is also extremely varied, going from the opera to theatre, to modern art galleries and, of course, our electronic music formats. Anyone who visits Turin for the first time will tell you it is the best kept secret in the country. After all, this is where Italy was born."

Siren Festival - Karl Vento (the guitarist in Anna Von Hausswolff's band)

"Siren festival struck me right in my heart. So many beautiful people came to see us at the courtyard of Palazzo d'Avalos and on the Sunday afternoon at Chiesa Di San Giuseppe. All of you contributed to making it into two magical experiences and for this I am very grateful. The scenery also plays a huge part of a musical live experience and this is one of Siren's strong attributes. The framing of this festival with the medieval stone buildings and streets and squares of Vasto definitely adds a extra dimension to the whole festival experience.

I would like to recommend everyone to head on out to Punta Aderci for a bike ride among the sunflower fields and olive groves. I spent one of my days there last year and it was a total soothing of the heart and mind. Wide stretching beaches and billowing landscapes. And also in that time of year the sunflowers are in full blossom. Beautiful! Furthermore you should not miss all the cafés and local supermarkets in Vasto. A lot of great coffee and local products."

Ypsigrock – Christoph Storbeck

"The real attraction is the diversity in the vicinity: from the clear Mediterranean sea and its small islands and beaches, to the mountains and their valleys; from the busy centre of metropolitan Palermo, to the thousands of years of history of the little picturesque village in which Ypsigrock takes place, and the square of the mediaeval castle which is the main stage…. All these distances are just a short drive, making it a unique site to visit – and we haven't even talked about the food…."

Home Festival - Andrea Zanata

“This summer everyone should come to Treviso because it's a wonderful city and because there's an amazing music festival, Home Festival. It is a medieval city with many nice views, well connected with trains to and from Trieste, Venice, Vicenza, Belluno and Padua.
The city's watercourses are reminiscent of older times. It is in the heart of Veneto, one of the Italian regions with the most charm and history. To get there, you can go up the inland hills, where venetian aristocrats used to go. Green countryside dotted with cypresses and groves is criss-crossed by vineyards from which some of the best Italian wines come. The place that once inspired Giorgione’s paintbrush now inspires intellectuals, musicians and artists.
Among the elements that makes Treviso a city made to man's measure, there is certainly the fact that one can walk across the city portion that develops within the city walls in twenty minutes. Make sure you stop to look around, contemplate and enjoy the beauty. It's definitely worth a visit, especially if you like good music and happy people."

Club To Club Torino –
Davide Amici

"The whole city of Turin turns into its most amazing attraction during the festival as it takes place at the same time as the Contemporary Art Week alongside many other events, including leading Italian art fair Artissima, an emerging artists fair called Paratissima and many more. City landmarks include the Mole Antonelliana / National Museum of Cinema, the Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama and the Egyptian Museum.

You can also experience some of Turin's most peculiar landmarks with A Great Symphony, an augmented-reality soundtrack devised by Club To Club with the British Council and created by Italian producers under the artistic direction of Hyperdub founder Kode9."
