Festival Estéreo Picnic 2020: Beyond The Headliners

Festival Estéreo Picnic 2020

When a festival boasts Guns N' Roses, The Strokes, The Chemical Brothers and Wu-Tang Clan as headliners, it's hardly surprising that some of the names lower down the lineup might not get much of a look-in. But in the case of Colombia's Festival Estéreo Picnic, there's plenty on offer besides these huge names at the very top of the poster.

Here, we've picked out just five that are worthy of your attention.

Kacey Musgraves

Comparisons to Taylor Swift must get a little boring for this Texan singer-songwriter, but the truth is there aren't many acts of late that have made country-pop with such a widespread appeal outside traditional country music circles. 2018's Golden Hour won Album of the Year at the GRAMMYs (beating the likes of Drake, Cardi B, Post Malone and Janelle Monáe) and her progressive lyrics and velvety melodies have earned her support from critics and the wider public alike.

James Blake

Admittedly one of the biggest names below the top row of the festival's poster, James Blake has established himself as one of music's most creative and chameleonic figures – turning his hand variously to off-kilter post-dubstep, lovelorn alt-pop, soulful piano ballads, experimental electronica, and hip-hop/R&B production for the likes of Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Vince Staples and Beyoncé. And, his live performances are an indefinable and captivating blend of all the of the above.

Elsa y Elmar

Colombia's very own Elsa Carvajal – aka Elsa y Elmar – is no stranger to Estéreo Picnic, having appeared at the festival back in 2015. But in that time she has grown immensely as an artist (not to mention her opening for Coldplay at their Bogotá show) and she draws from eclectic sounds with her music, infusing soulful R&B vocals with elements of indie pop, folk, trap, folk, Latin rhythms, and more.

Julianna

Another Colombia native and rising star of the country's electronic music underground, Julianna has cut her teeth in the clubs of Medellín playing a brand of blistering electro and acid-techno. Increasingly a fixture of the most revered festival lineups from DGTL São Paulo to arguably Europe's most respected electronic music event Dekmantel, now with a Resident Advisor podcast and Boiler Room set to her name, she is helping to put Colombia on the map as an electronic music hotbed.

Black Midi

Arguably the most talked-about band to come out of London's increasingly fruitful rock and post-punk scene, teen titans Black Midi are surrounded by a proverbial buzz everywhere they go. While their debut album was met with critical acclaim, it's the live arena where the four-piece really come into their own, from the unpredictable on-stage antics to the ferocious energy and talent of drummer Morgan Simpson.
