Ask most people what comes to mind when thinking of music festivals and the answers are likely to be similar: big-name bands, big stages and a vast open space (be it field, beach or forest). While that sort of experience is obviously great, that's not the only form a music festival can, or should, take.
It's important to recognise and celebrate some of the smaller festivals that aren't always able to shout as loudly as those with bigger budgets and grander set-ups. Festivals that have their own unique charm, and portray exactly what is so great about the huge diversity in music festivals across the globe.
In our latest instalment in our Under the Radar series, we take a look at Meadows in the Mountains, which invites an underground dance lineup into Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains for four days in June.
Where is it set?
The festival takes place atop Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains, on its border with Greece. The spectacular mountain range is home to forests, gorges, rivers, caves and a number of communities who call this incredible landscape their home.
And for four days a year, it's opened up to outsiders to come and experience this natural wilderness, watching the sunrise over the mountains after a long night partying.
What's the festival's ethos?
The music and arts adventure is all about breaking free from urban life and inviting festival-goers to escape into tranquillity, letting them forget their life back home for a few days alongside other like-minded people.
Community and sustainability are at the festival's heart, with some festival-goers even stay with locals, further embedding themselves into the area's culture and values.
What kind of music am I going to hear?
Meadows' dance lineup is defiantly underground and free-spirited, shunning commercial artists to showcase those who share their values of social harmony and self-expression. That makes it super varied, meaning you'll easily encounter heavier techno as well as whiffs of disco, even drum and bass.
What else is going down?
As well as the music, Meadows also lays on a diverse schedule of wellness activities, including several yoga classes each day as well as workshops on all kinds such as plant-based medicine, tarot, and Ayurveda.
Evenings are a chance to explore soulful celebrations, with chanting, a cacao ceremony and a selection of talented musicians all performing stripped-down sets.
What type of people will I find there?
Everyone at Meadows is there to escape and run free for a few days, meaning you'll find a festival filled with open-minded music fans and inspiring creatives.
