This Wednesday night the moment that most indie music nerds from Europe were waiting for arrived: Primavera Sound finally announced their full line-up.
And what a night! On top of having probably the funniest way to discover the line-up, though an 80’s style video game, they offered themselves a magical birthday present : one of their most complete line-ups so far. Lucky us! I will try to give you each important detail about their program, so you are sure not to miss anything if you travel to Barcelona this year...
THE HEADLINERS: BIG INDIE NAMES, BIG EXPECTATIONS
Amongst the big highlighted names, here are my recommendations to check out...
Having experienced The Black Keys live before, you can expect a fun and powerful set from one of the most talented rock bands out there. Alt-J have also proved they are very decent live, although we never heard them headlining such a major festival before. And Interpol delivered one of the best albums of 2014 with “El Pintor”, which you can be sure to hear songs live from so don't miss them!
THE BODY OF THE LINE-UP: EVERYBODY IS SERVED!
Primavera Sound really shines in showcasing some of the best indie bands right now, so it is no surprise that they have been just elected “Artists’ Favorite Festival” at the European Festival Awards a week ago at Eurosonic.
Whether you like Indie Rock (Death From Above 1979, Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, Mac Demarco, Twin Shadow, etc), Electro (Panda Bear, Chet Faker, Caribou, Jon Hopkins, Richie Hawtin, Dixon...) or even Rap (Tyler The Creator, Run The Jewels, Shabazz Palace...) you will find just the best of 2014 along with the best to come in 2015.
THE LEGENDS: PRIMAVERA'S GUILTY PLEASURE
Do you know how Quentin Tarantino likes to resurrect old forgotten actors (David Carradine in Kill Bill)? Well at Primavera Sound, it is the same. Every year, every line-up, they gift us with legends or even reformed bands just for the occasion.
In 2014, they managed to reunite Neutral Milk Hotel for a night and even invite Television to play their legendary album “Marquee Moon”.
Well this year is no exception. On the poster we can see the legendary british band RIDE reforming for only a bunch of festivals and gigs. (Check out our nostalgic piece on Ride here) Patti Smith comes to Barcelona, not only to perform her cult album “Horses”, but also to do a solo acoustic/spoken set! That’s for the 70’s but the 80’s are also represented by the infamous OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), famous for their hit “Enola Gay” which has been chosen to be the festival’s official hymn. How cool is that? At least you can bring your dad to the party!
The Church is also coming, but we prefer to manage expectations about this one...
THE DISCOVERIES: SO MUCH TO SEE...
Obviously I can’t go through every great discovery you can make at Primavera Sound, there is simply too many. Plus Pitchfork would surely do the job better than I will. However I can give a couple of exciting suggestions:
- Baxter Dury - Infamous son of the legendary british pop singer Ian Dury, it has been now many years since Baxter revealed its talent. However 2014 was a big year for him with a great album release (“It’s A Pleasure”, [PIAS] records) which ended up becoming critically acclaimed.
- Childhood - 90’s music fans, this one is for you. Their aerial pop seasoned with great vocals and lyrics is just bliss, this one is a no brainer.
- Ibeyi - We predicted that they would end up in the best festivals as we picked them in our 2015 : Ones to Watch article a couple of weeks ago. And we were right. Those two twins are producing just one of the best sounds we heard so far in 2015 : amazing soul voices, great bass lines and breathtaking lyrics. Don’t miss them.
- DIIV - The new favourites from Captured Tracks : the record label responsible for Beach Fossils, Mac Demarco, Widowspeak or Wild Nothing. After a brilliant first album, “Oshin” in 2012, DIIV are back with a new album expected to be released this spring. We wouldn’t be surprised if they were introducing their new baby at Primavera Sound... definitely one to watch!
To put it in a nutshell, once again Primavera Sound gifted us with a complete multi-genre line-up for every music nerd out there. This festival seems to be like wine : the older it is, the better it gets. This 2015 edition confirms the rule and it seems to be a great vintage. Happy 15th anniversary Primavera Sound, thank you and see you in May!
