Experimental music is a genre in which the artists don't follow the general rules of making music; this could be lyrically, instrumentally, in terms of the message the artist is trying to send, or a mixture of lots of things. Because experimental music doesn't follow conventional music formulas and makes its own rules, it generally doesn't make top 100 lists or get cross-listed with pop music. Still, there's a large population of experimental music consumers and makers and there are an assortment of festivals that feed into their musical preferences.

Experimental festivals include the likes of Sónar Festival, Orbits Festival and Spring Attitude Festival.

Artists such as Gorillaz, Diplo, Aurora Halal, and Shackleton can be seen playing at a number of experimental festivals.
