Funk originated in the mid 1960s, close to when R&B, soul, and jazz were created - these genres all played off of one another as they were all rooted in speaking to the African American experience. Funk is different in that it often uses synths, emphasizes the first beat of every measure, and sonically has a lot in common with disco music. James Brown was a the catalyst to the funk scene, and people who admired his innovative music soon followed suit in his style.

Funk festivals include the likes of Couleur Café, Love Supreme, Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival and NOS Summer Opening.

Artists such as George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire and Craig Charles can be seen playing at a number of funk festivals.
