Soul was invented in the 1950s as a sort of combination of jazz, blues, and gospel; invented to speak to, at large, the experiences of the African American community. The genre emphasized pride in being black and dominated the R&B charts in the 1960s. Soul has been most prominent in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and Memphis and often includes horns, organ, keys, and guitar.

Soul festivals include the likes of Soultown Festival, Return to Rio and Jungle Love Festival.

Artists such as Alexander O'Neal, Kenny Thomas and The Soulstars can be seen playing at a number of soul festivals.
