Ahead of another summer festival season, we caught up with Chris Mee from Fancy Dress Castle to get his top fancy dress tips to help us look the part.
Festival fancy dress is very much part of the overall festival experience. For example, this year's Bestival includes a brand new Spaceport Arena, as well as their regular Carnival Day Parade. But all festivals provide a great opportunity to dress up as something out of this world!
So the big question is, what are the big festival fancy dress themes for 2016?
Whether you're looking to buy a costume or make your own, here are nine ideas to get you inspired...
#1 Everyone loves a superhero!
At a festival, superhero capes even offer a degree of practicality. They can help protect you from the wind, the rain, and the sun – if it appears. Capes also allow you to sit down on the grass without getting wet. You also don't need to worry about where your underwear is during the inevitable festival camping chaos, as they will be clearly placed on the outside of your trousers!
If you're going to a more family-friendly festival, why not dress as a whole family of incredibles - Superboy, Supergirl, Superwoman and Super Dad!... Or try to be a complete set of Avengers with your mates?
#2 Simply out of this world – space
Star Wars is big this year, and the franchise continues to provide plenty of fancy dress options – whether you're intending to don the Danish pastries and become Princess Leia, or make a storm as ex-Storm Trooper Finn.
The flashing lights and pyrotechnics at festivals lend themselves well to a space theme. Camp Bestival's theme for 2016 is space, and it even features a brand new Spaceport Arena.
#3 Perfect for the British weather
With great festival music, does not always come great weather! British festivals are particularly notorious for their downpours and their mud baths. But with a snazzy festival poncho, you can look the part while remaining warm and dry.
#4 Music, music, music
Why not dress as the very star that put your festival on the map? Music's full of colourful characters like Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Geri Halliwell, and the fire starter himself, The Prodigy's Keith Flint.
You could also make your own outfit to mimic the acts you’re going to see. Imitation is the best form of flattery after all.
#5 Comedy & novelty costumes
Impress friends and strangers alike with a uniquely silly costume that will be remembered for years to come.
#6 A blast from the past – 60s, 70s and 80s
Some decades provide ample ideas for fancy dress. The 60s, 70s and 80s each had a unique style that's instantly identifiable. Maybe you were there, and want to recapture your youth. Or maybe you want to gently mock your parents, or dress like your favourite period film characters. In any case, the past 50 years offer a well of inspiration.
We've picked out a few of our favourites below. They include swinging 60s lady's and men's costumes, retro 70s hippy outfits, and for that ridiculous 80s look, a Top Gun maverick and a hair metal rock star costume.
#7 Double or quits – famous double acts
Tom & Jerry, Batman & Robin – and Batgirl, of course! Going as a double act with your best friend or life partner will be both adorable and hilarious, and it might even help you to find each other if you get lost.
Nobody who's ever encountered a fellow in a Morphsuit at a festival is ever likely to forget the experience. This is total transformation – a rare chance to really be someone else, if only for one weekend.
From Marvel and Star Wars characters, to Crash Test Dummies and Union Jack morphsuits, these clever one piece stretchy bodysuits are perfect for a festival, as you can wear your normal clothes underneath and even drink and see through the material!
#9 TV and book characters
Festivals are hardly the place for watching TV or reading – unless you're giving a slam poetry recital on Glastonbury's Left Field stage. But still, you can make a huge impression if you dress as a character from the pages of your favourite book, or from a favoruite TV show or film.
Dress as Where's Wally and be prepared to get featured in every single crowd shot during the TV coverage. Or go as Willy Wonka, and become the lord of your very own world of pure imagination. Dress up together as Bill & Ben with your little plant pots, or go as a full set of busy Minions.
