The Best Rolling Loud Portugal Alternatives for 2020

The Best Rolling Loud Portugal Alternatives for 2020

After much excitement, iconic global hip-hop brand Rolling Loud have now announced that tickets are sold out for the debut European festival (although there are still a very limited number of VIP tickets in packages available here).

With the likes of A$AP Rocky, Future, Wiz Khalifa, Young Thug, Meek Mill and Gucci Mane confirmed to be performing on the sands of Praia da Rocha in Portimão, it's easy to see why fans have flocked to book tickets in their thousands.

But despair not, as we've highlighted just a handful of the other festivals to consider. Some are in Portugal. Some are on beaches. Some are both. But each and every one features enough hip-hop heavy hitters to make them worthy of your attention.

Sumol Summer Fest

Lineup: Burna Boy, Trippie Red, Piruka (+ more TBA)

If it's a coastal summer party you're after, look no further. Combining sun, sea, sand, skate and surf with a hip-hop heavy lineup, Sumol Summer Fest has become a favourite for Portuguese fans, with recent lineups welcoming the likes of Young Thug, BROCKHAMPTON, Post Malone, French Montana, Joey Bada$$, Vic Mensa, Fat Joe and more.

When & Where: 3-4 July; Ericeira, Portugal

Afro Nation Portugal

Lineup
: French Montana, Torey Lanez, Beenie Man, Aya Nakamura, Maître Gims, Olamide, Wizkid, Dadju

Held on the very same beach as Rolling Loud, a week later, Afro Nation is a similarly huge-scale beach party featuring an array of global talent. Where Rolling Loud focuses more on trap and hip-hop, Afro Nation favours Afrobeats and dancehall, but there's no shortage of rap on the lineup for even the most die-hard fans.

When & Where: 17-19 July 2020; Portimão, Portugal

MEO Sudoeste

Lineup: Migos, Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Major Lazer (+ more TBA)

Leaning slightly more towards dance music, but no less devoted to throwing an unforgettable party on the Portuguese coast, MEO Sudoeste offers a full nine days of camping by the seaside to go with the four-day festival of hip-hop, Latin trap, reggaeton, dance music, and more.

When & Where: 4-8 August; Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Fresh Island Festival

Lineup
: DaBaby, Wizkid, D-Block Europe, DJ Semtex, Tim Westwood

Moving away from Portugal and into the Adriatic, Fresh Island is Croatia's biggest rap music festival, setting it apart from the house and techno giants that populate the region as stars of the scene head to the famous Zrce Beach.

When & Where: 4-9 July; Novalja, Croatia

Oh My! Music Festival

Lineup: Tyga, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Burna Boy, Lil Durk, D-Block Europe, Miss Banks, Naira Marley, Frenna (+ more TBA)

While previous versions of this Dutch rap giant were held in the city-centre surrounds of Amsterdam's Arena Park, the 2020 edition sees the whole affair move to the beach at Almere to the north of the capital city, making it even more suitable as a Rolling Loud alternative. What hasn't changed is the music on offer; the lineup calling upon a selection hip-hop favourites once more.

When & Where: 18 July; Almere, Netherlands

Super Bock Super Rock

Lineup
: A$AP Rocky, Brockhampton, GoldLink, Kali Uchis, Foals, Slow J, Rex Orange County (+ more TBA)

This may not be the most obvious option at first glance but let's look at facts. It's in Portugal. On a beach. And A$AP Rocky is headlining. There's no denying that the festival's origins lie in rock and indie music, but since Kendrick Lamar's headline appearance in 2016 the festival has welcomed Future, Travis Scott, Migos, Anderson .Paak, Stormzy, and plenty more besides.

When & Where: 16-18 July; Meco, Portugal
