Airbeat One Festival: 15 Years in Aftermovies

Airbeat One Festival 2019

Airbeat One Festival 2019

Neustadt-Glewe, Germany

Just over two weeks from now, Airbeat One Festival 2017 will be lighting the fuse and cranking up the volume, in celebration of reaching 15 years since its very first edition.

But ok, you got me: this article's headline is a tiny bit misleading, since the official aftermovies only take us back as far as 2009. In my defence, though, some of the fashion on display in those early ones makes it seem like a lot longer ago.

So let's take a step back into the late 2000s, where a growing festival was putting Neustadt-Glewe on the map, and was well on its way to becoming one of the biggest dance music festivals on the continent.

An unsteady hand-held camera combines plenty of crowd shots with glimpses of the old-school stage design. It's fair to say things have come a long way in the last eight years…

Just like the year before, 2010's aftermovie is a laid-back snapshot from the perspective genuine festival-goer.

With a much glossier film than the previous two years, the festival's 10th edition starts to feel a lot more like the Airbeat One we know today.

Turns out the name Airbeat One comes from the fact that it's hosted by an airport – where you can do a spot of skydiving…

After a slow-burn start, this one really shows the weekend at its energetic best.

Steve Aoki, Ummet Ozcan and Nicky Romero help to tell the story of 2014, Aoki ending with the line: "I'm always gonna remember Airbeat for their fruits." That's good to know, Steve.

The most impressive main stage yet makes for a film-maker's dream, as fireworks envelope the semi-colosseum.

And so to last summer, and confirmation that Airbeat One has established itself as one of the biggest house, EDM and hardstyle players in Europe. It seems to have nailed the art of capturing a festival in film, as well.

Airbeat One Festival 2017 will take place from 13 to 16 July 2017. Tickets and packages are still available here.
