Airbeat One Festival: A History In Aftermovies

Airbeat One Festival: A History In Aftermovies

Airbeat One Festival 2020

Airbeat One Festival 2020

Neustadt-Glewe, Germany

From humble, local beginnings to Germany's premier EDM-focused music experience, Airbeat One Festival now firmly sits on a pedestal due to its unequalled production values, inclusive atmosphere, ingenuity, creativity, and stellar lineups: 2019's instalment will see The Chainsmokers, Armin Van Buuren, Steve Aoki, and Afrojack all appear, alongside a rare German set from Martin Garrix.

So, with summer merely round the corner and the anticipation building, let's recount how Airbeat One became the celebrated festival that it now is, through the spectacular documentation that are the aftermovies.

The festival's first aftermovie was released after the success of the 2009 edition (although Airbeat One's debut outing was in 2002), so let's take a step back into the late 2000s, where a burgeoning festival was putting Neustadt-Glewe on the map, on its way to becoming one of the biggest dance music festivals on the continent.

2009

An unsteady hand-held camera combines plenty of crowd shots with glimpses of the old-school stage design. It's fair to say, things have come a long way in the last decade:

2010

Just like the year before, 2010's aftermovie is a laid-back snapshot from the perspective of a genuine festival-goer:

2011

With a much glossier film than the previous two years, the festival's 10th edition starts to feel a lot more like the Airbeat One we know today:

2012

Turns out, the name Airbeat One comes from the fact that it's hosted by an airport, where you can do a spot of skydiving:

2013

After a slow-burn start, this one really shows the weekend at its energetic best:

2014

Steve Aoki, Ummet Ozcan, and Nicky Romero help to tell the story of 2014, Aoki ending with the line: "I'm always gonna remember Airbeat for their fruits." That's good to know, Steve:

2015

The most impressive main stage yet makes for a film-maker's dream, as fireworks envelop the semi-colosseum:

2016

By 2016, they'd mastered the art of capturing the festival's spirit, joy, and atmosphere on film:

2017

Representing the festival's soul, this aftermovie shows the feverish adoration festival goers have for Airbeat One:

2018

The British-theme genuinely bamboozles due to the convincing stage design, featuring replicas of iconic landmarks like Big Ben and the London Eye. Let's see if 2019's Indian-theme can go one better:
