We've all been there and we'll all probably be there again. This isn't the time for big questions of why we do this to ourselves, now is the time for solutions. How am I going to make myself feel better.
Don't worry, we have your back. Here's our rundown of the best hangover food in the city.
Best eggcellent protein - Omelegg
Ferdinand Bolstraat 143, 1072 LH / Nieuwebrugsteeg 24, 1012 AH
Everyone has their hangover cure but really the only thing that seems to work across the board is protein. It just so happens that there is a lot of protein in eggs and at Omelegg you can get them cooked pretty much any way you can think of.
Best hair of the dog brunch - Gs Really Nice Place
Goudsbloemstraat 91, 1015 HP / Keizersgracht 177, 1016 DR / Ferdinand Bolstraat 158, 1072 GV
Some people think the easiest way to beat a hangover is to just keep drinking. There's some logic in the theory, but trying to outrun a hangover is kind of like trying to outrun Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men. That being said, there's no harm in a tasty Bloody Mary to go with some food, and Gs has both those covered.
Best pancakes - Mook Pancakes
De Clercqstraat 34H, 1052 NG / Jodenbreestraat 144, 1011 NS
Having a strong pancake history only reflects well on a country. I feel like there has to be a positive correlation between how often you eat pancakes and how nice you are. So if you're feeling down after waking up with a pounding headache and you need a boost, I recommend heading to Mook Pancakes and getting a big stack of pleasantness.
Best pizza - De Pizzabakkers
Plantage Kerklaan 2, 1018 TA / Haarlemmerdijk 128, 1013 JJ / Eerste Sweelinckstraat 16HS, 1073 CM
Pizza. It's ooey gooey delicious comfort food that's also easy to chew. Basically the perfect medicine for people who made some regrettable decisions last night. Amsterdam has a bunch of worthy pizza places, but there's just something about De Pizzabakkers mix of fresh ingredients on top of their wood fire oven crust that sets it apart.
Best fries - Par Hasard
Ceintuurbaan 113-115, 1072 EZ / Douwes Dekkerstraat, 1053 SX
Fries, chips, patat, whatever you call them The Netherlands has them in spades. I stand by the idea that protein is what you need to get over a hangover, but if carbs are really what you're craving definitely get over to Par Hasard for some of the best fries you've ever had. I'm talking like "wow, I didn't know fries could be this good" level.
Best burger - Lombardo's
Nieuwe spiegelstraat 50, 1017 DG
We're finally heading into the Ron Swanson side of things. If you're really hungover a burger may be a bit hard to stomach, but if you can get it down I promise you it will help. Every part of Lombardo's burgers are delicious. With a range of patties and toppings you should be able to find something for any craving.
Best vegan burger - Dutch Weed Burger Joint
Nicolaas Beetsstraat 47, 1053 RJ
But of course it's 2018 so we need to be inclusive. Not the Dutch weed you'd expect, according to their website these burgers are "enriched with seaweed and micro-algae". Not sure what you'll make of that, but these 100% plant based burgers are actually really good. And nothing had to die for you to enjoy it.
Best ramen - Fou Fow Ramen
Elandsgracht 2a, 1016 TV / Van Woustraat 3, 1074 AA
Ramen is great because has a bit of everything thrown into a life saving broth. Even bad ramen is good for a hangover. Luckily you don't have to settle for that though, with places like Fou Fow Ramen strewn throughout the city.
Best carbonara - Pasta Pasta
Warmoesstraat 49, 1012 HW / Ferdinand Bolstraat 67, 1072 LC
This might be a rogue entry, but carbonara has everything you could ask for in a medicinal meal: carbs, bacon, and cream. If that sounds like your kind of thing, the literalist-ly titled Pasta Pasta is where to go. A chef special, it'll have you feeling better in no time.
Best smoothie - Dr. Blend
Amsterdamseweg 511, 1181 BS
Sometimes when you've really got it bad, food it just not doable. Drinking water is good, but you'll need a bit more to change your current predicament. Dr. Blend juices and smoothies are great for getting those vitamins and protein that you need while still being pretty easy to stomach. And they're really healthy to boot.
