With June approaching and spring beginning to blossom into summer, the first of the many great European festivals are upon us, not least Best Kept Secret next weekend. What may have once been a hole-in-corner underdog is now widely regarded as one of The Netherlands', and indeed one of Europe's, best indie and alternative festivals. Held in a picturesque nature reserve and wildlife zoo with a cooling lake from where you can see the main stage, the festival attracts a friendly and mixed crowd largely from The Netherlands and neighbouring Belgium but has increasingly attracted music fans from beyond.
This year sees Bon Iver, Christine and the Queens and Kraftwerk top the bill, but the festival's real virtue is the quality of talent across the board; beneath the headliners you'll find Interpol, Carly Rae Jepsen, DJ Koze, Stereolab, Primal Scream, Big Thief, Lizzo, Kurt Vile & The Violators and Kate Tempest, and look to the smallest print on the poster and you'll still find the likes of Snail Mail, Viagra Boys, Jambinai, Lucy Dacus, Cate Le Bon and Faye Webster.
To get you (and ourselves) in the mood we've put together almost eight hours of the best music you'll hear next weekend. Whether there are plenty of names on the list you don't recognise and are keen to get acquainted with, or you just want to get hyped to get you through the next week, you'll find the answer in our essential playlist below.
Best Kept Secret takes place from 31 May - 2 June in Hilvarenbeek, The Netherlands. Day and weekend tickets, plus a range of camping and package options are available here.
