Fort Festival 2019: Five Mixes to Get You Rave-Ready

Fort Festival 2019: Five Mixes to Get You Rave-Ready

Fort Festival 2020

Fort Festival 2020

Tossa de Mar, Spain

While the attention of many festival fans across Europe is turning to Autumn and Winter offerings – summer feeling increasingly like a distant memory – there are still a few events eking out every last ray of sunshine before calling it for another year. And frankly, there aren't many better places to cling on to that summer season than on the Spanish coast, specifically the Costa Brava in this instance.

From 4-6 October, in the medieval mountain top fort from which it takes its name, Fort Festival offers up three days of electronic music excellence coming courtesy of a lineup of underground house and techno's finest – Ellen Allien, Tale of Us, Mind Against and more.

So with just over a week to go until historic monument becomes coastal club, we've pored over the lineup and picked out a handful of our favourite mixes from artists performing at this year's edition.

Erol Alkan - Global Gathering 2007

Over the last few weeks, underground electronic music veteran Erol Alkan has been delving into the archives and uploading mixes from therein to his Mixcloud, offering snapshots of his long and storied career – from early Bugged Out nights at iconic (and now closed) London club The End, through to more recent sets at Sónar and Glastonbury.

This one, a set recorded at the 2007 edition of UK dance music festival Global Gathering – which came to an end in 2014 after more than a decade – is a hugely nostalgic mix that perfectly captures the sounds of the time; heavily laden with the sounds of French house, electroclash, blog house and nu-rave that are so inherently linked with the first decade of the new millennium.

La Fleur - B4 Podcast

While Sweden may be her native land, it shouldn't really come as a surprise that La Fleur calls Berlin home these days, given her obvious love for techno music and culture.

Although by no means a new figure on the scene, with releases dating back to the beginning of the decade and a residency at Watergate that started in 2012, it's probably fair to the say that the last few years have seen the DJ and producer garner greater levels of attention and support than ever before.

In this recent podcast mix, she displays exactly why that is the case, exploring deep and expansive sounds, ranging from the sparse and melodic through to acid-infused and driving techno.

Henry Saiz – DHA Mix

Spain's very own Henry Saiz is certainly not one to shy away from the atmospheric. In his production and composition, as well as his mixes and live performances, he seemingly always seeks to take us all on a journey through the soundscapes that he creates. Here, for Dutch publication DHA (Deep House Amsterdam) he does exactly this, exploring the unerringly deep and atmospheric, from melancholia to euphoria and back.

BLOND:ISH – Fusion Festival 2019

With Vivie-Ann Bakos now "flying the BLOND:ISH flag solo" following many years working as part of a duo, a new chapter has begun in the ongoing story of the act. Part of that new chapter came at Germany's fiercely counter-cultural Fusion Festival earlier this summer, and even just listening to the mix is a transportive experience, the pervasive groove immediately bringing to mind a sun-soaked dancefloor and the shared experience of passionate electronic music fans.

HAAi – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

We've definitely included a mix from the Aussie-born, London-based DJ in one of these pieces in the past, but not since she was bestowed with the honour of receiving 'Essential Mix of the Year' for 2018, beating stiff competition in the form of Four Tet, Ricardo Villalobos and Avalon Emerson to name a few.

It's easy to see why it won, the two-hour mix demonstrating the eclecticism that has made HAAi such a popular act in the UK underground and beyond, spanning breakbeat, electro, industrial techno, left-field house, 90s rave, happy hardcore, new wave, synthpop and more.

Fort Festival 2019 takes place in Tossa de Mar from 4-6 October. Book the last remaining tickets and packages here.
