Nova Batida 2019: 5 Essential Sets To See

Nova Batida 2020

Nova Batida 2020

Lisbon, Portugal

Be it a holiday hotspot or cultural hub for European artists of all creeds, Lisbon is entering its Indian summer (well, not quite considering the 32 degree heat) which makes it prime time to visit the coastal city.

Perfect timing then, for Nova Batida; set within the hip, vibrant locale of LX Factory & Village Underground just outside the city centre, the festival is now in its second edition and has cultivated a hefty reputation already due to a forward-thinking lineup that ranges from jazz to soul, and from techno to disco.

Whilst there's plenty of artists to immerse yourselves in, here are five of the must-see sets:

Nubya Garcia

Indicative of how word travels fast in the contemporary climate, Nubya Garcia's (amongst others) inclusion on the festival lineup is justification that the South London nu-jazz scene is no longer burgeoning, more fully-fledged. The tenor saxophonist and band orchestrator is leading the charge for challenging, mystifying music; you'll bear witness to a true virtuoso in full bloom.

Floating Points

After the release of Reflections – Mojave Desert, which saw Sam Shepherd immersed in the vast desert scapes, recent releases from impending studio album Crush have seen the British producer return to more familiar territories; glitchy two-step-inducing beats accompanied by hallucinatory, Blade Runner-inspired synths. See the masterful electronic music maestro back to his cerebral best.

Jordan Rakei

This sultry New Zealander occupies similar sonic spaces to British bedfellow James Blake, albeit bolstered by a frenetic rhythm-driven base. Admittedly exploring a funkier, hook-focused trajectory on latest album Origin, his delicate vocal tones and knack for soulful composition tug on the heart-strings and incite a hip-shake in equal measure.

A firm favourite due to his encyclopaedic knowledge of classic house, rare African music gems, dingy techno, or jubilant disco bangers, Hunee's sets are both diverse and joyously compelling. Luckily, he's playing two sets (the first at Village Underground - Outdoor, and the second on Monday's beach party) so there's no excuse not to get involved.

Four Tet

Kieran Hebden is arguably the most chameleonic DJ/producer in electronica; it's been a hallmark of a fascinating career that's drawn ongoing adulation from a wide-spanning, varied fanbase and critics alike. Ideal then, to close out the second edition of a festival that welcomes a similarly assorted demographic of music lovers. Simply. Not. To. Be. Missed.

Nova Batida 2019 takes place this weekend in Lisbon, Portugal. Tickets are now sold out, so join the waiting list to hear about next year's ticket release dates.
