European Festival Awards 2017: The Winners

EXIT, Sziget and Wacken Winter Nights were amongst the winners at last night's European Festival Awards, held in Groningen.

The ceremony, which was its ninth, was hosted by Gordon Masson of IQ Magazine and Glastonbury's Ben Challis.

The biggest award of the night went to EXIT Festival, which won Best Major Festival, while Hungary's Sziget scooped the gong for Best Lineup, which saw performances from the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Kasabian, alt-J and Major Lazer.

Best New Festival was won by Germany's Wacken Winter Nights, from the same people behind the legendary open air event of a similar name. Slovakia's Pohoda won the Green Operation Award, which recognises an effort to move towards sustainability.

Slovenia's showcase festival MENT Ljubljana went home with two awards for Best Indoor Festival and Best Small Festival ahead of its fourth edition this February, while the Netherlands' Down The Rabbit Hole was crowned Best Medium Sized Festival.

When it came to performers, soulful British singer Rag 'N' Bone Man won Best Newcomer.
