Vienne, France

French festival Jazz à Vienne has a long and storied history, stretching back to the very first edition in 1981 which welcomed iconic performers Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie and Chuck Berry to the Théâtre Antique de Vienne. Now, four decades and countless other unforgettable performances on from that debut, the festival returns for a landmark 40th edition, and the first performers for this special occasion have been announced (with plenty more still to be revealed).

The initial acts confirmed to appear at the festival – which runs from 25 June until 11 July – are popular jazz pianist and singer Jamie Cullum, prominent Senegalese vocalist and performer Julia Sarr (accompanied by Jen Kanam Project), and a special collaborative show from musician and composer Hugh Coltman and Spanish illustrator and cartoonist Juanjo Guarnido (who designed the festival's artwork for this edition).

Also confirmed is a special show aimed at younger audiences, with Florent Briqué, Soro Solo and Bouba Landrille Tchouda presenting 'L'Afro Carnival des Animaux' – a performance that will marry dance and music from across the African continent with Camille Saint-Saën's famous 1886 composition.
