In a landmark year for Time Warp, marking 25 years since the debut event in Germany back in the heady days of the mid-nineties, the iconic festival brand is not just settling for the annual flagship party in Mannheim (as glorious as it was, back in April).
Instead, what's left of 2019 will see not only a return to the USA for the first time in several years, but also a second outing for Time Warp Brasil to build on the strong foundations laid by the first edition. On 15-16 November, the Sambódromo do Anhembi in São Paulo will play host to array of the electronic music underground's brightest lights, accompanied as ever by the production that has become synonymous with Time Warp.
So ahead of the event in a couple of weeks, we took the chance to explore the lineup and pick out some our favourite mixes from the artists within.
While DJ Mag's annual Top 100 DJs poll is famously not reflective of a great deal (talent, originality), the fact that it's a public poll is at the very least indicative of an artists global popularity and fanbase, and Peggy entering the list for the first time at 80 (close to the likes of deadmau5, Andy C, Charlotte de Witte and Robin Schulz) just goes to show how quickly her stock has risen in the dance music world in recent times. And with good cause as far as we're concerned.
Whether playing sets solo or alongside John Talabot as Talaboman, the Swedish maestro is an expert in getting crowds moving with his playful selections and unapologetic commitment to having a good time.
The Black Madonna
Hailing from Chicago, a city steeped in rich electronic music culture as the spiritual home of house music, The Black Madonna has become one of the scene's most bankable names by virtue of her high-energy, no-nonsense and dancefloor driven sets.
Gop Tun DJs
Naturally, part of Time Warp Brasil's appeal is the chance to showcase acts from São Paulo's vibrant electronic music underground, and there aren't many names that epitomise the scene better than Gop Tun. A party promoter and record label, the brand and its key figures are dedicated to celebrating the best in house and disco in its various guises – as this mix from the latest Dekmantel festival confirms.
If we're talking Brazilian artists who have excelled in the world of underground electronic music, few can match the success of ANNA. Operating at the darker end of the sound than the others featured here, her driving techno has seen her earn fans in the form of Sven Väth, Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettmann, Adam Beyer and plenty of other techno giants (and Time Warp stalwarts).
