2019 is the year of Time Warp. Marking their 25th anniversary, the German techno institution has spent the year on an absolutely tear, hosting star-studded festivals across the globe.
Their final celebration is taking them to no none other than New York City, and all the planning and anticipation have led to this moment. Returning to US soil for the first time since 2015, organisers put together an impressive lineup that balances genre legends and today's zeitgeist surfers for the occasion.
With the festivities set to kick off in a week's time we thought it was only fitting to collect a few of our favourite mixes from artist who are set to take the decks at New York's massive Expo Center. Enjoy.
One of the most exciting names in techno these days, few behind the decks rip it as hard as Amelie Lens. This Cercle set at Paris club LaPlage de Glazart finds the Belgian export mixing up techno and acid to concoct something truly intoxicating. Even if you think techno isn't for you, first I'd question why you're going to Time Warp, but second, give this a go and tell me you can't see yourself dancing to it.
One of the most legendary DJs on the Time Warp US bill, Richie Hawtin came to prominence in the 90s as one of the leaders of Detroit's second wave techno scene. Building on what came before from the likes of Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins and Derek May, Hawtin made his mark by being a leading proponent of minimal techno. Having since continually evolved with the times, his sets are masterclasses in melding old and new.
Palms Trax is a British-born, Berlin-based, Dutch-associated DJ who made a name for himself mixing infectious house grooves, but has been slowly moving into the darker sounds of techno. Simple, right? Much like his sets, his story weaves seemingly dissonant threads together in ways few could foresee working. As comfortable spinning disco records as contemporary minimal techno, suffice to say a Palms Trax set is a unique experience.
You'd be hard pressed to find a more in demand DJ right now than Peggy Gou. The Korean DJ, multi-instrumentalist and singer has been absolutely racking up the frequent flyer miles since bursting onto the scene in 2018 when she released the undisputed song of the summer 'It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)'. Her sets are always joyous, sweaty messes, in the best way possible. Don't miss this one.
Techno's crown princess, Nina Kraviz is not only a bonafide star but a seasoned Time Warp vet'. This 2018 set from Time Warp's home in Mannheim, Germany shows exactly why the Russian-born artist has reached such heights. A fan of all things unusual, Kraviz is seemingly able to channel other-worldly sounds and turn them into unrelenting, undeniable bangers.
