Ten Incredible Destination Festivals for 2019

Such is the ever changing landscape of the festival that music fans are constantly looking for new ways to enhance their festival experience. 

Gone are the days when a field with a few stages would suffice. Nowadays, festival-goers are combining their festival-hit with a holiday, looking for a trip that ticks a host of boxes - a unique location, great music, other activities to do beyond the festival...

Ultra Europe

Festival lineup (2019): Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, DJ Snake, Carl Cox, Afrojack, Adam Beyer, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren

The European edition of the worldwide dance festival, Ultra Europe lays on a week of parties in what is dubbed Destination Ultra. That includes its main event inside Split's historic Stadion Poljud, which in 2019 was filled with names such as Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta, as well as Ultra Beach on the island of Hvar, a Regatta beach party on Brač, and a number of parties hosted by Resistance inside beach clubs and fortresses.

Secret Solstice

Festival lineup (2019): Martin Garrix, Rita Ora, Robert Plant & The Sensational Shapeshifters, Patti Smith, Black Eyed Peas, The Sugarhill Gang, Morcheeba, Kerri Chandler

Held over the summer solstice, in a country where the sun never sets, there aren't many festival experiences unique as that of Secret Solstice.

The icelandic getaway brings some of music's biggest names to the sparsely populated island, showing off its lineup across its Reykjavík site, as well as at secret lagoon parties, midnight sun boat outings and even inside a glacier.

EXIT Festival

Festival lineup (2019): The Cure, Carl Cox, Skepta, Greta van Fleet, Jeff Mills, Chase & Status, The Chainsmokers, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike

EXIT is a Serbian rock, indie and electronic music festival held each summer in Novi Sad's magical 18th century Petrovaradin Fortress, showcasing its diverse lineup across over 40 stages inside the fort's moats, trenches and even tunnels.

And beyond the festival, festival-goers are also encouraged to explore Novi Sad – one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2021 – brimming with excellent museums, galleries, restaurants, cafes and bars.

KAABOO Del Mar is a Californian paradise. Setting up on the sun-drenched Pacific coast, the festival brings together music, comedy, art and food in this idyllic coastal setting.

Meadows in the Mountains

Ever fancied partying atop a mountain while the sun comes up? Well, at Bulgaria's Meadows in the Mountains, you can do just that. 

This truly inspiring music and arts adventure is all about immersing yourself in the wilderness and tranquility of this secluded Bulgarian community within the country's Rhodope Mountains. So embedded are you encouraged to get, that many festival-goers actually stay with locals during the festival, before heading into the mountains to party.

Oasis Festival

Nestled in the shade of Morocco's Atlas Mountains, and inside the grounds of the luxury Fellah Hotel, is Oasis Festival. Glitch Festival

Sonus Festival

RBC Ottawa Bluesfest

Festival lineup: The Killers, alt-J, Erich Church, Backstreet Boys, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Kygo, Alexisonfire

What may have started out as a traditional blues festival has steadily grown into one of Canada's most celebrated and diverse. Its lineups now welcome sounds from across the genres, yet it continues to remain anchored to its blues roots. 

The festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2019 with another mammoth 10 days of music, further cementing itself as a true bucket list festival.
