Tomorrowland 2020: Beyond The Headliners

Tomorrowland 2020: Beyond The Headliners

Tomorrowland 2021

Tomorrowland 2021

Boom, Bélgica

The Tomorrowland 2020 lineup has been out for a couple weeks, so hopefully you've been able to read through the entire poster by now. As always it is packed full of the biggest names in dance music, with the likes of Martin Garrix, Carl Cox and David Guetta (to name just three) leading the way.

The Tomorrowland MainStage is undoubtedly the most immersive and detailed stage in the entire festival world, so of course you need to spend time there. But what makes the festival so special is that the lineup is extremely deep, full of not only the biggest names but also the biggest talents.

Because headliners often eat up all the attention, we thought it might be helpful to showcase some acts on the bill playing on smaller stages. Here are just ten that you should check out, if you're lucky enough to be heading to Tomorrowland 2020.

Four Tet

Freedom Stage - 17 July

The thing about a festival of Tomorrowland's stature is that the names off the MainStage are still pretty big. Case in point: Four Tet's inclusion on this list. One of electronic music's leading avant artists, he has been melding different sounds and genres professionally for almost a quarter of a century. Endlessly creative and seemingly never not working, either in front of an audience or in the studio, Four Tet is truly one of his generation's best and most inventive electronic artists.

Red Axes

Core presents Adriatique - Core, 17 July

From one of the most surprising party capitals of the world, Tel Aviv, Red Axes are able to create a party vibe in their sets like few others. The duo are childhood friends and started making psych rock together as teenagers. Transitioning into an electronic outfit over the years, their eclectic tastes give their music a unique sound and feel.

Helena Hauff

Exhale - Atmosphere, 17 July

There are a lot of amazing DJs on this list, but if you're going to choose just one to check out, make it this one. The modern Queen of Electro, Helena Hauff is able to get the dancefloor pulsating like few others. Melding electro with acid and techno, her sets have an intensity to them that's hard to match, while not getting too heavy.

Âme B2B Rødhåd

Core - 18 July

While a pairing of the tech house duo Âme and the prince of dark techno Rødhåd may look odd on paper, in reality the two acts pull elements from their sounds that combine in surprisingly effective and unique ways. The final product ends up psychedelically atmospheric while remaining somewhat grounded in danceable beats.

Horse Meat Disco

Glitterbox - Kara Savi, 19 July

Hey, do you like fun? No? Oh OK, well scroll on then. Started in 2003 as a queer club culture night in London, Horse Meat Disco has evolved into a full on cultural force. Freedom of expression and acceptance of difference is the name of the game here, along with getting down and sweaty to the mighty disco-funk-house grooves.

ANNA

Cocoon - Core, 19 July

One of the leading lights of the new wave of techno, ANNA's music never loses that sense of groove, ensuring that it stays eminently danceable. For those wanting to check out some techno but don't know where to start, this is the set for you.

Recondite [live]

Spectrum - Core, 24 July

Creating a distinct sound in techno is not an easy thing to do, but German producer Recondite has managed to do just that. His delicate yet absorbing approach to music jettisons everything non-essential and draws the listener in for what is quite a personal experience.

Dixon

Afterlife - Atmosphere, 25 July

One of electronic music's most respected acts, Dixon has been mesmerising audiences for nearly thirty years now. Helping pave the way for what is now known as tech-house, his ability to mix live and take the listener on a sonic journey landed him atop Resident Advisor's best DJs poll the last four years they ran it.

Eats Everything

Carl Cox - Atmosphere, 26 July

Eats Everything is a throwback to when DJing was simply about creating a party atmosphere and getting dancefloors shaking. A product of Bristol, he is steeped in the city's rich garage, bass and jungle history, bringing the energy from these genres into more house and techno based sounds.

DJ Seinfeld

Maceo Plex presents Ellum - Core, 26 July

Rising to prominence in the lo-fi house movement a few years ago alongside acts like Ross From Friends and DJ Boring, DJ Seinfeld is unrepentantly dedicated to sending dancefloors into rapturous frenzy. Biting synth beats and arresting builds are a calling card. If you want to lose yourself in the rhythm, this is a set for you.
