Turin, Itália

Ask most people what comes to mind when thinking of music festivals and the answers are likely to be similar: big name bands, big stages and a vast open space (be it field, beach or forest). While that sort of experience is obviously great, that's not the only form a music festival can, or should, take.

It's important to recognise and celebrate some of the smaller festivals that aren't always able to shout as loudly as those with bigger budgets and grander set-ups. Festivals that have their own unique charm, and portray exactly what is so great about the huge diversity in music festivals across the globe.

The latest festival we're shining a light on – after previously featuring the likes of Gagnef in Sweden, Portugal's Bon Sons and Stange Sounds From Beyond in Amsterdam – is Turin's Jazz:Re:Found.

As the name suggests, the central theme of the festival is to celebrate modern reinterpretations of the jazz sound, paying tribute to the lasting legacy of the hugely influential genre and its pioneers.

With performances from the likes of Goldie, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Corey Henry, the lineup draws from numerous genres, showcasing a number of exciting acts.

Ahead of the latest edition at the end of the month, we caught up with festival founder Denis Longhi to get a feel for what Jazz:Re:Found is all about.

What is the festival’s ethos?

Today, black music is warmth, experimentation, crossbreeding, avant-garde, tradition, and rhythm. Jazz:Re:Found explores these definitions, with a curious and forward thinking vision on music, honouring great names of the past while looking at the most current scenes with a sharp eye and sensitive ear. Spread across various boutique locations, the festival brings a rich lineup of live performers and DJs to the city’s dancefloors, representing all genres from hip hop to future-jazz, soul to disco, and more.

Pick a song that embodies your festival

Legendary broken beat, killer track.

Where is your festival set?

In a beautiful post-industrial location north of the centre of Torino, called Q35. Apart from the stages, we will create a small market, chill out areas and a food and beverage garden for our public to enjoy the music in the proper way.

What kind of people am I going to find here?

All kinds of people! A strong point of the festival is its wide appeal: young cats as well as seasoned music connoisseurs, local people, travellers from nearby countries, jazz heads as well as electronic fans.

What kind of music am I going to hear?

West London sound [broken beat] and Gilles Peterson mood are the inspiration for Jazz:Re:Found. Black music is our root, and the different manifestations from soul, hip hop, disco, jazz, and Afrofuturism are the crossover we are looking for.

All in all, the border-breaking vision on music and lots of good vibes are the key elements that make Jazz Re:Found a great festival to mark off on your calendar.

What's one of your favourite memories from a previous edition?

In 2009, at the second Jazz:Re:Found edition, Lamb created something epic. The most emotional interplay I've ever seen in my life. Deep and romantic, something really crazy for Italy.

In 2011 Kid Koala was a hero, [his set was] something like a circus or cabaret, an amazing eclectic show. From dixieland to drum & bass, all in a coherent cosmic journey.

In 2015 Roy Ayers was the most iconic interpretation of the Jazz:Re:Found feeling. A legend, finally in the JZ:RF house.

And in 2016 Mr Scruff made the 2.0 version of Kid Koala's DJ set, a trip inside different landscapes and beats, with unbelievable consciousness and security.

What is your festival's atmosphere?

We always work to create a positive and enjoyable atmosphere, in line with the music proposal: 'Never Hype / Ever Ahead'.

What is your festival's spirit animal (mythical or real)?

The cat! From the Egyptian myths linked to jazz iconography, to Gil Scott-Heron's Secrets album cover, to the infamous Cats on Synthesizers in Space, our festival is like a cat, not following any trends, small but fierce, lovely and caring.

Jazz:Re:Found takes place in Turin from 29 November - 3 December. Book here, and see our guide for more information.
