For some reason, Extrema Outdoor Belgium seems to be overlooked in conversations about Europe's best electronic music festivals. Maybe it's because it still feels like a new addition to the scene, compared to some of the elder statesmen. But every year when the lineup is announced, it's unfailingly packed with a whole load of the biggest names in the scene. And this year is no different.
There are techno veterans from both sides of the Atlantic in Adam Beyer, Len Faki and Moodymann, British house music pioneers Sasha and Lee Burridge and all manner of exciting breakthrough acts from recents years: Hunee, Palms Trax, Dax J, Peggy Gou and meteoric Belgian star Amelie Lens, to name just a few. Have a look at the whole lineup below.
One name on that poster that more than slightly raises eyebrows though is Lithunian producer Ten Walls, who has been persona non grata in dance music circles following some pretty abhorrent comments about homosexuality in a bizarre Facebook rant (back in 2015). Whether or not this – along with his scheduled appearance at Croatian festival Labyrinth Open Air – marks some sort of acceptance back into the scene remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely to happen without some sort of resistance from other artists and fans alike.
